Dog trainer: What is his role and do I need one?

Dog trainers do not work in the same way as trainers because they have a particular objective to achieve with the animal entrusted to them.

So, a professional can train a dog for rescue, for safety

Or for helping disabled people. An educator bases his work on the behavior of the dog in daily life. Training is useful to many people, including companies and professionals who work with their dogs every day.

Dog trainers, the difference with educators

Companies and associations but also many individuals call on dog trainers so that their animal is capable of carrying out a set of specific actions. It is therefore not a question of identifying the dog’s behavioral problems but of teaching him to do new things. Unlike dog trainers, dog trainers do not help owners do better with their animals. They take care of the animal itself. It is a job of training and not of education. It thus implies that the dog is already educated but it is possible that the training includes an education part.

Dogs have been trained since the dawn of time to assist humans in many tasks. Today, the dog is an integral part of many professional activities such as with the gendarmerie and the army but also in the humanitarian sector with rescue dogs or even security guard dogs, guide dogs, dogs sleds etc.

The major difference between the dog trainer and the dog trainer therefore lies in the fact that the trainer only works with the dog while the trainer works with the dog and its master. Moreover, in the latter case, it is largely to the master that the trainer teaches, much more than to the dog itself.

The work of dog trainers

The job of dog trainers is a tough business. It is practiced outdoors and often requires training methods to be applied in uncomfortable conditions. It is an activity that requires great rigor, unfailing patience and of course, training a dog requires perfect knowledge of canine behavior.

But this is not enough because in-depth knowledge of canine psychology does not guarantee results with all dogs. If certain breeds are easier to train for a specific objective, it is essential to apply the appropriate method. The exercises should show results, although it does not take the same amount of time with all dogs because, as with humans, some learn faster than others.

Most dog trainers are specialists who only work with a particular professional sector. In fact, these are not the same trainers who train dogs to search for drugs or people, or even to guide blind people. If the theory of learning has the same bases, the practice differs and the training exercises as well.

Why train your dog?

It can be useful to have your dog trained by a professional when the animal has the task of guarding private property. Also, some people with disabilities can have their dog trained to accomplish very specific tasks. Individuals also want to train their dog for rescue.

Professional trainers refuse to train a dog to attack or bite if you do not have the professional capacity to carry out certain professions, such as security or cash transport.
